Abęl Makkonen Tesfaye (born 16 February 1990), known professionally by his stage name The Weeknd (pronounced "the weekend"), is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and record producer. In late 2010, Tesfaye anonymously uploaded several songs to YouTube under the name "The Weeknd". He released three nine-track mixtapes throughout 2011: House of Balloons, Thursday and Echoes of Silence, which were critically acclaimed. The following year, he released a compilation album Trilogy, thirty tracks consisting of remastered versions of the mixtape material and three additional songs. It was released under Republic Records and his own label XO.

The album's sole guest appearance comes from frequent collaborator Drake. The album's production was primarily handled by Danny Boy Styles, The Weeknd himself and Jason "DaHeala" Quenneville.

Beauty Behind the Madness is the second studio album by Canadian singer The Weeknd. It was released on August 28, 2015, by XO, and Republic Records. The album features guest appearances from Labrinth, Ed Sheeran and Lana Del Rey, while the production on the album was handled by Illangelo, Mike Dean, Danny Boy Styles, and Max Martin, among others.
The album was supported by five singles: "Often", "The Hills", "Can't Feel My Face", "In the Night" and "Acquainted". "The Hills" and "Can't Feel My Face" both reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. Beauty Behind the Madness also includes the Academy Award-nominated song "Earned It", which was released in December 2014 as the lead single from the soundtrack to Fifty Shades of Grey. According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, Beauty Behind the Madness was the tenth best-selling album of 2015 with 1.5 million copies sold worldwide. It has sold over 2 million copies.
